Cupcakes take flight

Coal City Intermediate School held its annual Cupcake Launch on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Fifth grade students had an opportunity to take part in the event by creating a manual or air powered launcher. Students could participate independently or work as a team.

There were 20 launchers entered—18 manual and two air powered.  Each entry was given two cupcakes to launch and the longest distance was recorded. The top teams in each category  then had a chance to launch one more cupcake to determine the winners.

In manual launchers the winners were:

First place—159.9 feet—Spooky Mega Launcher created by Sienna Ruffatto and Reagan Jeschke

Second place—98.8 feet—Nolan’s Launcher created by Nolan Cardenas

Third place—62.4 feet— K Ways created by Kaitlyn Walker
