A symbol of service

Memorial Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in defense of freedom. In all, 761 Coal City area residents were called to military service from World War I to Vietnam—24 of them did not return home. The names of these military heroes are engraved on plaques on the Community Veterans Monument.

The Coal City School District is honored to host the monument that includes the names of over 1,100 military veterans from the community dating back to the Spanish-American War. Located on the Coal City Intermediate School campus, the monument reminds us of the sacrifices given by those who have and are serving in the U.S. military.

As a reminder, the Coal City Intermediate School campus remains closed due to an Emergency Health and Life Safety Amendment.

We recognize that many community members traditionally visit the monument during Memorial Day weekend and throughout the year to honor those who have served. However, out of an abundance of caution, we respectfully ask the community to refrain from visiting the monument until the emergency closure has been officially lifted.

This Memorial Day, we invite you to pause wherever you are to remember and honor the brave men and women who have given their lives in service to our nation. Your understanding and continued support are deeply appreciated.
