Principal's Message

Tracy Carlson, Principal

I’m proud to welcome you to Coal City Intermediate School—a safe, supportive, and special place where learning is meaningful and kindness leads the way.

My journey in education began in January 1997 in Lockport District 91, where I taught 8th grade at Kelvin Grove School. In 2005, I transitioned into administration as principal of Milne Grove School, serving PreK–3rd grade. In 2011, I had the privilege of returning home to Coal City as principal of CCIS—a building rich in history. I attended middle school here in the late 1980s, and my parents walked these same halls when it was a high school in the 1960s. Our beautiful school is now more than 100 years old and continues to be a place of learning, growth, and community.

At CCIS, we maintain high academic and behavioral expectations, with a strong focus on character and kindness. Our goal is for every student to feel safe, included, respected, and loved. We believe that when children feel valued, they thrive.

We also recognize that a strong home-to-school connection is key to student success. I encourage all parents and guardians to stay engaged and communicate regularly with teachers. Together, we can ensure the best possible experience for your child. You can support your student by helping them:

  • Attend school daily and arrive on time, ready to learn

  • Complete all homework assignments

  • Read every day to foster a love for reading and improve literacy skills

  • Share about their school day to keep you informed and involved

If you ever have questions, concerns, or input—or need support in any way—please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at tcarlson@coalcityschools.org.

The staff and I look forward to an amazing school year ahead!

Mrs. Tracy Carlson
